Hon. (Dr.) Bisi Oluranti Oyewo Micheal (BOOM), the lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North Constituency and Chairperson of the House Committee on Culture and Tourism, called for for the reintroduction of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Day and the implementation of a comprehensive statewide waste management strategy.
The motion, which was raised during the Assembly plenary on Tuesday addresses the growing environmental and public health concerns in various communities across the state, especially in light of the rainy season.
Hon. Oluranti raised alarm over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in streets, open spaces, and drainage channels, which has led to flash floods, blocked watercourses, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
In her motion, Hon. Oluranti called on the Executive Arm of Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in collaboration with Local Government Authorities, to Identify areas lacking public waste bins and ensure their prompt installation and establish a structured and timely waste collection and evacuation system
Also to launch a comprehensive public sensitization campaign against illegal dumping, reinstate the Environmental Sanitation Day on the last Saturday of every month ,mobilize community leaders, market associations, and youth groups for participation and enforcement
According to Hon. Oluranti, “Clean surroundings are a basic right and responsibility. By adopting a proactive approach, Oyo State can safeguard public health, reduce flooding, and instill a culture of environmental discipline.”
She further stressed that civic education must be supported by visible infrastructure and enforceable policies to achieve long-term behavioral change.
The motion also urges the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters to collaborate with local government councils to ensure grassroots implementation and effective monitoring.
This initiative adds to Hon. Bisi Oluranti’s growing reputation for responsive representation, innovative policy proposals, and deep-rooted community engagement in the Oyo State legislature.
