Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, has paid an emotional tribute to his late elder brother, Engr. Sunday Makinde, describing him as a selfless unifier who sacrificed his university education to ensure his younger siblings had the opportunity to further their studies.
Speaking at the Service of Songs held at the Government House Arcade, Agodi, Ibadan, the governor recounted how his brother chose to join the Nigerian Navy instead of pursuing a university education, a decision made to ease the financial burden on their humble parents and provide better opportunities for his siblings.
“Despite our age difference, he never imposed decisions on us or looked down on anyone. His sacrifice made all the difference in our lives. He showed us what true love and responsibility mean. We are going to miss him dearly,” Governor Makinde said.
Engr. Sunday Makinde, who passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the age of 65, was remembered as a man of peace, courage, and humility.
Several speakers at the event testified to his modesty and integrity, noting that despite being the governor’s brother, he never used his influence for personal gain or to oppress others.
“It was only after his death was announced that many realized he was related to the governor. He was an active member of Bishop Akinyele Memorial Anglican Church and a dedicated member of his society,” a church member said.
In his sermon titled “What Is Life?”, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, the Presiding Bishop of Rehoboth Cathedral, urged people to use their lives for good and to serve God diligently.
“You do not own your life—God does. When He calls for it, no one can stop it. Now that you are still breathing, use your time wisely to serve Him and do His will,” he said.
The Service of Songs was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, including political leaders, top government officials, party stalwarts, and members of the clergy, who gathered to pay their final respects to the late Sunday Makinde.
Final Funeral Rites
Funeral arrangements for the deceased continued today at Bishop Akinyele Memorial Anglican Church, Iwo Road, followed by the entertainment of guests at Recreation Club, Ibadan.
