The Ekiti State House of Assembly has called for more collaboration between the police authorities and the Assembly in the area of law enforcement and promotion of good governance.
Speaker of the House of Assembly, Right Honourable (Pastor) Kola Oluwawole, in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, made the call while playing host to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr Itaotu Okonkon , in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Wednesday.
Pastor Oluwawole called on the police to do more in the area of enforcement of relevant laws that could promote peaceful coexistence of various groups living in the state.
He recalled that the public petition committee of the State Assembly received various petitions from individuals and organisations on daily basis and called for more collaboration in resolving such issues.
Oluwawole also charged the police authorities to properly investigate the destruction of farmlands and produce at Oke Ako and Ipao farm settlements in Ikole Local Government Area of the state, by alleged Fulani herdsmen recently.
“We have in place relevant laws that can foster the unity of the various groups resident in the state. But we need more hands in the area of enforcement of all laws,” he noted.
He added that the State government had made an official report of the incident to the police authorities, pointing out that the anti-gracing law of Ekiti State should be enforced by the police.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Okonkon, expressed appreciation to the Speaker for finding time out of his tight schedule to host him and his entourage.
He pledged the cooperation of the police authorities to the State government towards making the State safe for all law abiding citizens.
