In a significant move to mark his inauguration, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 43 prisoners across the state.
The decision, based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, underscores the governor’s commitment to reformative justice and humane governance.
As part of the initiative, Governor Aiyedatiwa has ordered the immediate release of eight inmates. Additionally, the sentences of 15 prisoners previously condemned to death have been commuted to various prison terms, while 20 convicts serving life imprisonment have had their sentences reduced.
Dr. Ajulo emphasized that the move reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in rehabilitation and second chances.
“This decision is a testament to the governor’s commitment to ensuring that our justice system embodies both mercy and humanity,” he stated.
He further noted that the governor’s action aligns with broader efforts to reform the penal system and promote the reintegration of ex-convicts into society.
