The ‘Are Ona kakanfo’ Chieftaincy’ title could be rightly said had its origination only in the then Oyo Yoruba Empire and or what one could be termed Yoruba Kingdom but which kingdom and or empire now politically reduced, bastardized and limited in value contents and relevance to a misnomer title of ‘Oyo Chiefdom
The then Oyo Yoruba Empire comprised what is today western, north central Nigeria, and Ifon Kingdom of “Idaomi” Dahomey in the present day Republic of Benin. It was an Empire brought about and sustained by years of wars and conquests through well organized military, army and cavalry headed by the “Are of Ona kakanfo” under the Kingship and leadership of Alaafin of Yoruba Oyo kingdom .
Notable among modern day great Yoruba leaders like the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola a.k.a. “SLA” and Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola a.k.a “MKO’ who were conferred the ‘Are Ona Kakanfo’ title could be said were more of political nature considerations, then at the heat of politics of their days. However it could be said without any ambiguous colouration that the only one that recently earned the “Yoruba War Lord Supreme” Are Ona Kakanfo title is the persistent, untiring and indefatigable Chief Gani Adams who saw wars and fought wars basically only and basically for the Yoruba cause.
It was a well vicariously taken decision for the entire race at home and abroad by the Iku Baba Yeye Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi Alowolodu bi iyere.
