Lagos State Government on Sunday 9, July 2017 urged residents to remain calm and vigilant of this torrential rain experience in the State in the last few days.
The State Commissioner for environment Dr. Babatunde Adejare who spoke after inspecting the area affected by the flood in the State, alleyed fears of residents,insisting that the government has activated its emergency response system to respond efficiently where necessary.
He said “Most of the flooding would recede after a period of time, attributing the cause to the lagoon slowing down the flow of rainfall after from drainage channels.
The commissioner however said the government are on top of the situation. Government is concerned by the recent occurence of flooding in some part of Victorial Island, Lekki, Oniru and its environs and our emergency lines 112 and 767 are opens 24 hours for residents to report any emergency situation in their areas.
Dr. Babatunde said “The government is concerned about the safety of residents, hence the continue call on those living in the flood-prone areas to relocate temporarilly pending when the rain recedes.
Like we have been telling them, if the rain still persist, please don’t go out of your homes, except you are living by the coast or by the low line. If you are one of those, you are to move to mainland, move away from the coast until the rain recedes. But if you are living upland and its raining persistantly and its not necessary or compulsary for you to go out please stay indoor.
“If you also have contact with flood water, wash your hands always, whatever that has been touched by the flood water should not be eaten, its important.”
The commissioner however urged the residents to conttinue to maintain a high level of cleanliness, especially in disposing their refuse, while assuring that the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode led administrave would not relent its effeorts untill it achieves a cleaner Lagos.
