A tragic accident involving a Dangote Cement truck and an unregistered tricycle claimed the lives of five people on Friday night at Alapoka, along the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The accident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m., was confirmed by the Spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi.
According to Akinbiyi, the Dangote truck, with registration number GRZ 767 XA, lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle conveying five passengers, killing all occupants instantly.
He said, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village, Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Friday at about 8:25 p.m. The accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck. The five occupants of the tricycle died on the spot.
“According to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle. Unfortunately, the driver was unaware that he had collided with it until the truck’s tyres crushed the tricycle and its passengers.”
Akinbiyi added that the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue operation to the scene. However, the rescue team narrowly escaped an attack from angry residents before security operatives, including the Amotekun Corps, restored order.
He said the remains of the victims had been deposited at a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
This latest tragedy adds to the list of fatal accidents involving Dangote trucks across the country, raising renewed concerns over road safety and vehicle maintenance in Nigeria’s haulage industry.
