In a bid to support taxpayers during the peak of the Companies Income Tax (CIT) filing season, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced the extension of its operational days to include weekends throughout June 2025.
The directive, issued by FIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, mandates all tax offices to operate on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning June 14 and running through June 29. Saturday hours are set for 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while Sunday operations will run from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
According to a statement signed by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, the decision reflects Adedeji’s drive to align the agency’s customer-centric vision with responsive and accessible service delivery.
“The month of June marks the peak of the annual Companies Income Tax (CIT) filing season, with many companies whose financial year ends on December 31 required to file returns by June 30,” the statement explained.
To ensure smooth implementation, the Coordinating Directors of the Large Taxpayers Group (LTG), Government and Medium Taxpayers Group (GMTG), and Emerging Taxpayers Group (ETG)—Ms Amina Ado, Dr Dick Irri, and Mr Kabir Abba respectively—have communicated the directive to all tax office staff within their jurisdictions.
In a jointly signed internal memo, the directors emphasized that the weekend opening will ease the filing process for companies and help the agency maximize revenue collection during this critical period.
Since assuming office, Dr. Adedeji has led a reform-focused administration at the FIRS, repositioning the agency from a traditional tax collector to a modern, service-driven institution. The weekend operations initiative is seen as another strategic move to promote voluntary compliance and enhance taxpayer experience.
