The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has pleaded not guilty charge of illegal possession of firearms brought against him by the Ministry of Justice
Emefiele who appears before a Federal High Court Lagos on Tuesday morning. was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on unlicenced possession of firearms.
He was alleged to be in possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a licence.
He was brought into court six weeks after he was arrested and detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN,who applied for his bail after his client pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge contended that the offence for which Emefiele was changed is bailable
Justice Nicolas Oweibo, trial judge in the matter however granted him bail in the sum of N20 million and a surety in like sum
President Bola Tinubu had suspended Emefiele as the apex bank chief on June 9, 2023. A day after, the DSS confirmed that the embattled, suspended CBN chief was in its custody
