As Muslims across the world celebrates Eid-el-Fitri amidst coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council has called on members to be more prayerful and work harder to stop further spread of the virus.

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mr Ademola Babalola and Secretary, Olusola Oladapo, on Sunday in Ibadan.

The NUJ in the statement made available to newsmen called on the authorities to put more efforts against the pandemic considering its effect on the nation’s economy.

“As we felicitate with Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan 1441 A.H, we are not unmindful of the economic effect of the pandemic on our members as frontline workers.

“This effect of the pandemic caused the sack of some of our members. Some are on compulsory leave while some are suffering salary cuts. This is a trying time that calls for fervent prayers and concerted efforts of the authorities,”it said.

The union sought the understanding of media owners to have a rethink on arbitrary sack of journalists, while calling on government to support media organisations with stimulus packages aimed at cushioning the effect of the pandemic.

It called on members to remain steadfast in prayers and upheld professionalism while carrying out their duties.

The NUJ called on Muslims to sustain the principles of perseverance, sacrifice, love, kindness, compassion and peaceful co-existence exhibited during Ramadan.

The union urged Muslims to extend all these principles beyond Ramadan, praying that Almighty Allah accept their supplications and reward them abundantly.

It added that the union would continue to exhibit strong commitment to members welfare and encourage professionalism at all times.
