The Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic killing of a Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) student by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer during a high-speed pursuit of a traffic offender within the community.

In a press statement signed by High Chief (Senator) Sharafadeen Alli, Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland and acting chairman of the council, the incident was described as a devastating loss — not only to the bereaved family but to the entire community and society at large.

“We condemn in strong terms the reckless use of firearms in civilian areas, particularly in school zones and residential communities,” the statement read. “The life of every citizen, especially our children, must be treated as sacred.”

The council called for a full, transparent investigation by the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant authorities to identify the officer involved and ensure justice is served. They also demanded adequate compensation and support for the grieving family.

In addition, the council urged security agencies to retrain and sensitise officers on the responsible use of firearms and the importance of professionalism, particularly when operating in populated areas.

“No pursuit or operation should be worth the life of an innocent citizen,” the council emphasized.

On behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, and the entire Egbeda Traditional Council, High Chief Alli extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and the school community, praying for the peaceful repose of the young soul and an end to such tragedies in the land.
