The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has condemned the circulation of false narratives on social media following the tragic killing of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE II) Aminu Sahabi Salisu. The officer was fatally shot on January 17, 2025, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, during an operation in Awka, Anambra State.
In a press statement signed, Dele Oyewale,Head, Media & Publicity
the anti graft agency described the death as a significant loss and expressed concerns over the inhuman and misleading narratives trivializing the incident.
The Commission criticized social media commentators for aligning with a criminal act, stating that no justification exists for the murder of a law enforcement officer performing his patriotic duty.
According to the EFCC, Salisu and his team were conducting an early-morning operation at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, in pursuit of suspected internet fraudsters. The operation, which adhered to established protocols and was documented at the Anambra State Police Command, initially led to the arrest of 37 suspects.
Trouble began when Ikechukwu, upon spotting the investigators through a CCTV camera, refused to grant them access to his apartment. Despite the investigators’ introduction, Ikechukwu opened fire, killing Salisu and injuring another officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed Ikechukwu’s involvement in coding and dubious online medical supplies. Items recovered from his apartment included laptops, iPads, and recording devices, confirming his engagement in internet fraud. Ikechukwu is currently in police custody and will face trial for his actions.
The EFCC warned that the activities of internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” are increasingly becoming a threat to public safety. It noted that intelligence reports link these individuals to violent crimes, including kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and warned that future attacks on its officers would be met with the full force of the law.
While mourning the loss of Salisu, the EFCC expressed gratitude to sister agencies and individuals who have offered support and condolences during this difficult time.
