Renowned politician, strategist, and medical doctor, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has passed away at the age of 72. His death has been met with an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.
President Tinubu, in a condolence message, expressed deep sorrow over Okupe’s passing, describing him as a bold and articulate advocate for national development.
He extended his sympathies to the Okupe family, the people of Ogun State, and the Iperu-Remo community, where the late politician hailed from. The president acknowledged Okupe’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape and prayed for the repose of his soul.
Governor Abiodun also described Okupe’s death as a deep personal loss, especially coming shortly after the passing of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo. He praised Okupe’s unwavering dedication to democracy and his ability to maintain friendships across political divides despite shifting alliances from the NRC to the PDP, Accord Party, and Labour Party. He highlighted Okupe’s resilience during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule, noting that he endured persecution but remained steadfast in his convictions.
Okupe, a trained medical doctor, left an indelible mark in politics and media. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and served as National Publicity Secretary of the NRC, Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, and spokesperson for top politicians like Atiku Abubakar and Bukola Saraki. His articulate communication skills made him a key player in national discourse.
Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu Remo, Okupe had a distinguished academic and professional career. He attended St. Jude’s School, Igbobi College, and the University of Ibadan, where he trained as a medical doctor. His contributions to media and political strategy, including founding Life Mirror, a health-focused newspaper, further cemented his legacy. Governor Abiodun described Okupe as a rare politician who could engage in meaningful discourse with humility and respect. He prayed for Okupe’s family and expressed hope that his legacy as a statesman, strategist, and patriot would continue to inspire future generations.
