The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers mentioned in its earlier press release has no connection with any alleged coup attempt, describing reports linking the development to a supposed plot as false, malicious, and aimed at creating unnecessary tension in the country.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 18, 2025, by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ refuted claims by an online publication suggesting that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was related to an attempted military takeover.
Gusau explained that the decision to cancel the anniversary parade was taken to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country and to enable the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
He stressed that the ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process designed to maintain discipline and professionalism within the ranks, adding that an investigative panel has been constituted and its findings will be made public.
The DHQ urged Nigerians to disregard the rumours and continue supporting the nation’s security agencies, affirming that the Armed Forces remain loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under President Tinubu.
“Democracy is forever,” Brigadier General Gusau stated, assuring that the Federal Government, legislature, and judiciary are working closely for the safety, development, and wellbeing of the nation.
