A High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced a driver, Mr. Yusuf Baba, to three months imprisonment for dangerous driving and ordered him to pay ₦3,190,000 in compensation for damages caused to a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) patrol vehicle and other cars during an attempt to evade arrest.

The court, in a judgment delivered on Tuesday, October 29, 2025, found Baba guilty of dangerous driving but discharged him on the count of assaulting a marshal on duty. In addition to the jail term, the court imposed an option of ₦50,000 fine and suspended his driver’s licence for three months.

According to the FRSC, the incident occurred on June 10, 2025, under Dantata Bridge, Abuja, when Baba was flagged down during a mobile court session for overloading. Instead of complying, he sped off recklessly, lost control, and crashed into an FRSC patrol vehicle and another motorist’s car before fleeing the scene. He was later apprehended at Major Filling Station along CITEC Road and charged with dangerous driving and assaulting a marshal.

Reacting to the judgment, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, commended the judiciary for upholding justice and the Corps’ legal department for its diligence. He described the verdict as a “resounding victory for road safety, law enforcement, and accountability on Nigerian roads.”

“This judgment has once again proven that the era of impunity on our roads is over. Anyone who endangers lives, attacks law enforcement, or damages public property will face the full wrath of the law,” Mohammed stated.

He reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to ensuring sanity on Nigerian roads and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and respect law enforcement officers.
