The town of Efon Alaaye witnessed an outpouring of love and tributes as friends, family, and well-wishers gathered to honour the life of Otunba Olakunle Lawrence Akinyele, who passed away on April 19 at the age of 62.
A retired customs officer and hotelier, Otunba Akinyele reportedly slumped during a thanksgiving service in Lagos held in celebration of his wife’s 60th birthday. His sudden passing shocked many, but those close to him say he died doing what he loved—serving God.
At a Christian wake held at his residence in Efon Alaaye, speakers described him as a devoted Christian, a responsible father, and a man of peace who lived a fulfilled and impactful life.
“He was loving, calm, and easy-going,” said Nike, his younger sister. “He cherished his family and friends deeply and was always surrounded by people because of his warmth and kindness.”
One of his daughters recalled how fondly the family called him “Baba Girls”, adding that, “He embraced and appreciated every gift God gave him. He lived with purpose and gratitude. His impact continues even after his death.”
A friend from Lagos testified to his dedication to God and humanity. “He turned his retirement thanksgiving into a fundraising event for the church. He was a man who served both God and humanity wholeheartedly.”
Delivering the sermon, the Shepherd in Charge of Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Igbala, Efon Alaaye, described Otunba Akinyele’s passing as a solemn reminder of life’s transience. He urged attendees to live with purpose and stay spiritually prepared.
Special prayers were offered for the family, and the event drew dignitaries from various walks of life.
Otunba Akinyele will be laid to rest on friday at his residence in Efon Alaaye following a funeral service.
