President, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Alabo Charlesye David Charles has challenged professional bodies in Nigeria to monitor the performances of professionals in politics and sanction those found wanting of ethical codes and standards.

Surveyor Charles stated this while delivering the Annual Alumni Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association.

He noted that professional bodies should collaborate with research institutions to deepen their contribution to nation-building.

The President of Institution of Surveyors called on all tiers “of government to use science and technology to solve the myriad challenges facing our nation”, adding that “the only way Africans can gain respect is through science and technology backed by innovative political leadership”.

“Technology, artificial intelligence, Internet of things, and visual reality have brought many professions to a common play field. There is a great need for sectoral professions to close ranks so that they can better relate and play adequate supportive role to the nation’s development ”

Charles who spoke on “The role of professional bodies in nation building: The Nigerian Situation”, lamented that professional bodies are becoming more like political parties where elections have become rancorous amd subject to primordial considerations of tribe, religion and such other sectional interests.

According to him, professional associations needs to evolve “systems that are not only democratic but strongly guided by high moral principles and ethics”.

He admonished “Professionals in government and industry to stand their grounds to ensure the code of ethics of their professions guide and direct their actions”.

He tasked them to infuse orderly behaviour and integrity into politics in Nigeria.

“Nation building through Alumni Associations or their roles cant be negated, primarily because most times, it’s a healthy, professional platform where intellectuals meet to exchange ideas, network and mentor, lobby/pressure members of rulling class and encourage members to participate actively in politics and also give back to their institutions”

In her speech, President of UI Alumni Association Worldwide, Professor Elsie Adewoye stated that the role of professional bodies in maintaining ethical standards in Nigeria cannot be over-emphacised urging UI alumni to continue to provide excellent leadership and solution providers to solve Nigerian problems.

The Acting VC, Prof Adebola Ekanola stated that all Nigerians must contribute to nation building.

“It is clear that many people have got it wrong that the task of nation building is exclusive of those in politics but it is clear that all hands must be on deck. All professionals have important roles to play in the construction and reconstruction of Nigeria. If professionals would rise up to the task, we would begin to see the transformation we desire”
