No fewer than 10 persons have reportedly lost their lives while seven other victims were rescued in a building collapse incident at Jegede Olorunsogo in Ona Ara local government area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, Rev. Akinyemi Akinyinka, said they received distress calls from the people in the neighbourhood at 2am.
The Executive Assistant to the governor on security in Oyo state, Sunday Odukoya and Chairman Ona-Ara local government, Dr Temitope Kolapo expressed sadness over the incident and both of them commiserated with the families of the deceased.
The Oyo State Police Command has also confirmed the tragic incident
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, has shaken the local community.
In a statement the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed the details of the incident. He said, “Today being Thursday 31/10/2024 around 0200hrs, a storey building located around Ojugbede Jegede Area, Ogbere, collapsed, leading to the immediate loss of ten lives, while eight others are currently battling with various degrees of life-threatening injuries.”
Following the incident, security measures have been put in place to safeguard the area. Osifeso noted that adequate security has been deployed to prevent hoodlums from exploiting the scene, ensuring the protection of other residents’ lives and properties.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. Osifeso assured that updates would be provided as the situation unfolds.
The collapse has cast a pall over the Ojugbede Jegede area as the community mourns the loss of lives while hoping for the recovery of the injured.
