Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sympathy for the victims of two tragic incidents: the fire outbreak at Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan and the tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos.
The Aleshinloye Market fire, which occurred on Tuesday night, razed several stalls and destroyed goods worth millions of naira. Traders lamented the absence of a functional fire station within the market, which houses about 2,000 shops. Meanwhile, the Otedola Bridge explosion claimed two lives and left three others injured.
In a statement posted on his X page , Atiku extended condolences to the affected families and the governments of Oyo and Lagos states. He called for increased fire safety awareness in markets, public places, and on the roads, urging authorities to strengthen safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
“These unfortunate incidents reinforce the urgent need for increased awareness about fire management. I urge all relevant authorities to enhance safety measures and preparedness,” he said.
Traders at Aleshinloye Market have appealed to the Oyo State government to improve fire response infrastructure, while emergency responders in Lagos continue to investigate the cause of the tanker explosion.
