Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a fearless nationalist and a leading advocate for justice, equity, and good governance.
In a tribute, Atiku praised the late Afenifere leader’s lifelong commitment to democracy and social justice. He recalled Adebanjo’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s political evolution, particularly his efforts in ending military rule and entrenching democratic governance.
“I can vividly recall the heroic role that Pa Adebanjo played in wresting power from the military and enthroning democratic governance in Nigeria. He was at the forefront of the fight against military dictatorship,” Atiku stated.
He highlighted Adebanjo’s decades-long struggle for justice, noting that the late nationalist spent his youth fighting against colonial rule, his middle years resisting military dictatorship, and his later years championing democracy, the rule of law, and good governance in Nigeria.
“Pa Adebanjo was a golden example of how to live and die for the good of the country,” Atiku added.
Describing him as an activist extraordinaire and a bridge builder, Atiku acknowledged Adebanjo’s role in mentoring generations of civil rights activists and his leadership in the battle against injustice and oppression. “The life and times of Adebanjo remain a priceless map for contemporary and upcoming activists advocating for good governance,” he said.
Extending his condolences to the Adebanjo family, Atiku urged them to take solace in the fact that their late patriarch was not only a father to them but to the entire country and a pride to the Black race. He also commiserated with the people and government of Ogun State.
Atiku concluded his tribute by praying for the peaceful repose of the elder statesman’s soul, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s political history will never be forgotten.
