Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of political affiliation with the party he helped found.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and the party’s departure from its foundational principles as reasons for his exit.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” Atiku wrote. He expressed deep appreciation to the party for the opportunities it afforded him, particularly his two terms as Vice President of Nigeria and his multiple runs as a presidential candidate.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated, while affirming his respect for the PDP’s leadership and wishing them well in future endeavors.
The letter, which was acknowledged and stamped as received on July 14, 2025, by the ward leadership, marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
Atiku’s resignation is expected to generate widespread speculation about his next political move, with analysts watching closely for signs of alignment with other parties or formation of a new political platform.
Atiku Abubakar served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and has been a central figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule.
