The immediate past Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Oyebamiji was adopted on Saturday at the party’s governorship primary held at the premises of Ebunoluwa Group of Schools, Osogbo.
His emergence followed a motion moved by two governorship aspirants, Kunle Adegoke (SAN) and Senator Babajide Omoworare, calling for the adoption of a consensus candidate. The motion was subsequently subjected to a voice vote by the Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Committee and Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, and was overwhelmingly endorsed by party members present.
Declaring the result, Okpebholo said, “By the power conferred on me, I present to you Bola Oyebamiji as the governorship candidate of our party.”
The APC primary commenced earlier in the day with the arrival of the primary election committee, led by Okpebholo, who had hinted that the candidate would emerge by affirmation.
He arrived at the venue alongside the committee’s co-chairman and Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as well as other members of the committee, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule; Dr Obafemi Hamzat, who represented the Lagos State Governor; and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
Ahead of the primary, 1,660 delegates eligible to elect the APC candidate for the December 13 governorship election had emerged.
There were also strong indications that the seven APC governorship aspirants in the state agreed to step down in support of a consensus flagbearer following a late-night meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.
