The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Owoade, Elewuetu I, on Saturday displayed royal humility and a spirit of unity during the West Africa Economic Summit held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The event, which brought together top traditional rulers, government officials, and private sector stakeholders, witnessed a warm royal moment when the Alaafin, upon arrival at the venue, proceeded straight to greet the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II. The Ooni, who was already seated in the VIP waiting room with associates, stood to warmly receive the Alaafin, with both monarchs exchanging pleasantries and engaging in a brief conversation before the Alaafin proceeded to his designated seat with his queen.
The Ooni, who serves as Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) and Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Council of Traditional Rulers (SNCTR), had been ushered into the venue earlier alongside other notable personalities, including Balogun Lai Labode, Kurunmi of Ijaye and Are Ona-Kakanfo-Elect of Egbaland; Bashorun Eniola Fayose, Bashorun Adunbarin Oodua; and Dr. Ayo Falil Abina, Asoju Oodua.
When the time came for the dignitaries to move into the main hall of the summit, the Ooni and the Alaafin walked in nearly at the same time, taking their respective seats in a clear display of mutual respect and harmony.
The exchange between the two revered monarchs highlighted a strong message of unity and dignity among Yoruba traditional rulers.
According to Otunba Moses Olafare, Director of Media & Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, the Alaafin’s conduct at the event reflected royal maturity and statesmanship.
“Alaafin Owoade conducted himself with grace and dignity. He even took the opportunity to book a visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife later this week. It was a moment that affirmed his commitment to peace and Yoruba unity,” Olafare noted.
The summit, which focused on economic integration and development within the West African sub-region, was declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and featured discussions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and investment opportunities.
