The office of the Imperial Majesty, Oba Engr. Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I, has announced the commencement of Orò Ipẹbi, the traditional rites preceding the official ascension of the Alaafin-designate to the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo.
According to a statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Rotimi the rites will run from Friday, March 7, to Saturday, March 29, 2025. During this period, the incoming Ikú Bàbá Yèyé will undergo absolute seclusion, a mandatory aspect of the ancient coronation process.
As part of the tradition, a curfew will be enforced in Oyo township from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily throughout the Ipẹbi period. Residents are advised that movement within the town during curfew hours is strictly prohibited. Anyone found violating this restriction will be arrested and detained until 7:00 AM the following day.
The statement emphasized the sacred nature of the Ipẹbi rites, urging residents and visitors to respect the tradition as it is an integral part of the installation of the Alaafin.
This development marks a crucial step in the transition of leadership in the historic Oyo Kingdom, following the selection of Oba Owoade as the new Alaafin.
