The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has applauded indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturing companies for their continued contributions to the nation’s healthcare system, despite facing significant challenges.
The association praised the firms for ensuring the steady production of essential medicines, improving access to healthcare, and bolstering Nigeria’s economic growth.
In a statement made available to journalists ahead of its 44th Annual International Conference scheduled to hold from July 22 to July 27, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State, the ACPN emphasized the critical role of local manufacturers in the country’s health and economic advancement.
This year’s conference, themed “Technology Integration, Personalized Care: The Future of Community Pharmacy Practice,” underscores the urgent need for pharmacists to embrace emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, telepharmacy, and electronic health records while adopting patient-centered care models.
Speaking on the upcoming event, ACPN National Chairman, Pharm. Ezeh Ambrose Igwekamma, called on the federal government to provide special incentives to support the pharmaceutical industry. He emphasized the need for policy frameworks that encourage the importation of raw materials and promote local production of pharmaceutical products.
“There should be deliberate, targeted incentives for the pharmaceutical industry to support production and reduce our dependence on imported drugs,” Igwekamma said. “Local manufacturing presents an opportunity for job creation, international trade, economic growth, and national security.”
He further stressed the importance of positioning Nigeria to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that developing the pharmaceutical sector would ensure availability of affordable, accessible, and high-quality medicines.
The 2025 ACPN conference is expected to attract over 3,000 delegates, including pharmacists, technologists, researchers, policymakers, and healthcare entrepreneurs from within and outside Nigeria.
Key highlights of the event will include a symbolic walk against fake and counterfeit medicines, technical sessions, innovation showcases, and cultural displays.
Through the annual conference, the ACPN is advocating for urgent reforms and the strengthening of Nigeria’s drug regulatory framework, including amendments to the Fake Drug and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act.
As the conference draws near, the association is calling on healthcare professionals, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to unite in modernizing community pharmacy and advancing the nation’s healthcare system.
