Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday as a helicopter crash claimed the lives of seven people in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The aircraft, operated by Aryan Aviation and identified as a Bell 407 model with registration VT-BKA, was flying from Kedarnath to Guptkashi along the revered Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage route in the Himalayan region.

According to officials, the helicopter lost contact shortly after taking off at around 05:15 local time. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched after local authorities received an alert about a missing aircraft from Kedarnath. The crash site was later located near Gaurikund, a key transit point for pilgrims.

All seven on board—five passengers, a two-year-old child, and the pilot—were confirmed dead by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a full investigation into the incident.

“This is very sad news,” said Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in a statement posted on social media platform X. He noted that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and other emergency teams were actively involved in recovery efforts.

In response to the tragedy, Dhami ordered an immediate inquiry into the cause of the crash and temporarily suspended all helicopter services operating along the Char Dham Yatra route until Monday. He added that services would only resume following a high-level review involving all charter operators, with particular attention to pilot experience in high-altitude conditions.

As part of broader safety reforms, Dhami directed the development of a strict Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for helicopter services in the state. He also announced the establishment of a centralized command and coordination center in Dehradun to improve operational safety and oversight.

“The negligence at whatever level has been committed will be identified and punitive action will be ensured,” the Chief Minister said firmly.

The Rudraprayag district administration has been tasked with contacting the victims’ families and making proper arrangements to return the bodies to their respective states.

Kedarnath, one of four key sites on the Char Dham Yatra, attracts hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims annually. The increasing number of visitors has led to a boom in helicopter charter services, particularly catering to wealthier pilgrims seeking to avoid the demanding mountain treks.

Uttarakhand officials revealed that this latest crash follows a worrying trend, with three emergency landings and two crashes reported in the past six weeks alone along the same pilgrimage route. The frequency of such incidents has raised serious safety concerns about air travel in the challenging Himalayan terrain.

The nation mourns the tragic loss of life and awaits the findings of the AAIB investigation to prevent future occurrences.
