A joyous occasion turned into heartbreak in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Saturday as a groom and two of his friends lost their lives in a fatal auto crash just moments before his wedding ceremony.
The groom, Superintendent of Police (SP) Mustapha Garba Gumau, was enroute from Gumau to Magaman-Gumau for his wedding fatiha scheduled for 10:00 a.m. when the tragedy struck at about 9:00 a.m. near Bargan Tsamiya village.
According to reports, the vehicle conveying the groom and his entourage veered off the road and crashed, killing SP Garba and two of his close associates — Shuaibu Umar and Sulaiman Musa — on the spot. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing, with residents and sympathizers struggling to come to terms with the tragic end of what was meant to be a day of celebration.
Just hours earlier, the deceased officer had shared a heartfelt post on social media expressing joy and anticipation for his wedding day — unaware it would tragically become the day of his death.
Meanwhile, a similar tragedy reportedly occurred in Ogun State, where a mother-in-law was crushed to death by a speeding motorcycle while on her way to a wedding ceremony. The incident happened around Olowotedo Estate, opposite Orimerunmu, along the Mowe–Ibafo road.
These heartbreaking incidents have drawn an outpouring of grief from Nigerians on social media, with many expressing sorrow and offering prayers for the deceased.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un (From Allah we came, and to Him we shall return),” many mourners wrote in tribute to the late police officer and others who lost their lives.
As condolences pour in, families of the victims are left grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones, a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life and the fragility of joyous moments.
