The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new National President.
Prof. Piwuna succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
His emergence followed a keenly contested election against Professor Adamu Babayo of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.
Piwuna’s election comes at a crucial time for Nigeria’s university system, with renewed concerns over the distribution of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government, increasing brain drain, and lingering threats of industrial action.
Sources close to the union say members are looking to the new leadership to steer ASUU through these pressing challenges and restore stability to the nation’s public university system.
