Gunmen have kidnapped three relatives of a former Daily Trust editor, Ahmed Ajobe, in Awo, Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State, demanding N50 million for their release.

The victims include Ajobe’s immediate younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir. They were reportedly abducted on Thursday, November 21, 2024, while returning from a market in a neighboring community where they had gone to purchase items for the seven-day prayers of Ajobe’s late mother, Aishetu Tahir, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, confirmed the incident on Friday, November 22. Aya stated that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area had deployed officers to secure the release of the victims, while the State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, ordered the tactical team to reinforce efforts on the ground.

“Everything possible will be done to ensure the safe release of the victims and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Aya assured.

While the journalist could not be reached for comment, a family friend, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the kidnappers contacted the family on Friday afternoon, demanding N50 million.

“Three of Ajobe’s family members were kidnapped at gunpoint at about 3 p.m. on Thursday,” the source said. “The kidnappers are asking for N50 million, but I cannot confirm what the family is offering in negotiations. As of now, no ransom has been paid, and the victims remain in captivity.”

The abduction has heightened tension in the community, with residents urging security agencies to intensify efforts to curb rising insecurity in the area.
