The Oyo State Government has fixed December 29, 2026, for chairmanship and councillorship elections across the 33 local government areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following the State Executive Council meeting.
According to Oyelade, the Council approved the payment of the state government’s counterpart funding to the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to enable it to commence preparations for the elections.
He said the polls would be jointly financed by the state government and the local government councils, with the councils contributing 60 per cent of the total cost and the state government providing the remaining 40 per cent.
Under the arrangement, the 33 local government councils will contribute ₦2.566 billion, while the state government will provide ₦1.711 billion for the exercise.
The Council also approved ₦437.4 million for the accreditation requirements of the Nursing Programme at Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
Oyelade explained that the funding would support the university’s diversification efforts beyond its traditional science and technology focus and help it become financially self-sustaining.
He said the university was at the final stage of the accreditation process, warning that failure to meet the professional accreditation deadline could put the substantial investment in the programme at risk.
The commissioner added that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde had spent more than ₦3 billion on the acquisition of equipment for the commencement of the programme.
In another development, the State Executive Council approved the payment of the state government’s counterpart funding for the construction, renovation and equipping of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Oyo Annex.
The government is to provide ₦6.744 billion, representing 50 per cent of the total project cost, while Oyo East Local Government Area will contribute the remaining 50 per cent.
The total cost of the project is ₦13.489 billion.
According to the statement, the Council considered the investment necessary, noting that approximately 70 per cent of patients accessing services at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso come from Oyo town and its surrounding communities.
The Council commended Governor Makinde for what it described as his exemplary performance and commitment to the development of the state, despite the limited period remaining in his administration, which is scheduled to end in May 2027.
It also praised the governor for his strategic cooperation with the 33 local government councils, describing the collaboration as important to the state’s development efforts.
The statement was signed by Oyelade, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, on October 20, 2026.
