Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting religious institutions that promote peace, unity and development across the state.
Makinde stated this on Saturday while speaking at the celebration of the 120th anniversary of First Baptist Church, Idikan, Ibadan.
The governor, who congratulated the church and the Nigerian Baptist Convention on the milestone, described First Baptist Church, Idikan, as a historic institution of faith that has contributed significantly to the spiritual and moral development of Oyo State.
According to a statement signed by Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, media adviser Governor Makinde prayed that the glory of the church in the next 120 years would surpass its achievements in the past 120 years.
Makinde commended the leadership, pastors and members of the church for their commitment to the propagation of the gospel, community service and nation-building over the last 12 decades.
At the event, the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. Dr. David Olushola Idowu, presented an award to Governor Makinde in appreciation of his presence at the anniversary celebration and his support for the church.
Idowu also acknowledged the governor’s donation of a Hummer bus to support the propagation of the gospel.
Special prayers were offered for Governor Makinde, Oyo State and Nigeria during the anniversary programme.
The event was attended by the former President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention and former National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle; President of the Ibadan Baptist Conference, Rev. Dr. Oyekola Bamidele; Minister in Charge of First Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Solomon Oyelami; Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN, among other dignitaries.
The anniversary celebration marked 120 years of the church’s existence and its contributions to the religious and socio-economic development of the community and the state.
