The G100 has urged Nigeria’s opposition political parties to prioritise cooperation, unity and national interest ahead of the First Summit of Nigeria’s Opposition Political Parties scheduled to hold at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the group, the G100 said the summit presented an important opportunity for opposition parties to demonstrate political maturity and provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
The group noted that although political parties have different histories, identities, ambitions and legitimate interests, such differences should not prevent them from working together on issues of common interest.
“Cooperation does not require any party to surrender these. Nor does it require political leaders to abandon their aspirations. It simply requires the wisdom to recognise that there are moments when what unites us must become more important than what separates us,” the statement said.
According to the G100, Nigeria’s electoral experience has shown that a fragmented opposition could inadvertently strengthen the incumbent by dividing votes, resources and political energies among parties seeking to appeal to similar constituencies.
“Division is a choice. Cooperation must now become a strategy,” the group declared.
The G100 said the summit should be used to establish practical mechanisms for dialogue, coordination and cooperation among participating opposition parties while respecting the identities and structures of individual parties.
It urged opposition leaders, candidates and members attending the summit to approach the gathering in good faith and with an open mind, stressing that disagreements and competing political ambitions were natural but should not overshadow the larger interests of the country.
“There will be disagreements, competing ambitions and difficult conversations. These are natural in politics. But none should prevent us from recognising the greater danger of allowing our differences to deny Nigerians a credible alternative,” the group said.
The group stressed that the summit should not be viewed as an avenue for determining winners or losers within the opposition but as the beginning of a process aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“Tomorrow is not about declaring winners or losers within the opposition. It is about beginning the work of ensuring that Nigerian democracy wins,” it added.
The G100 also appealed to opposition leaders to remain mindful of the millions of Nigerians whose aspirations, it said, extend beyond the interests of individual political parties or politicians.
“Alone, each opposition party can make its case. Together, the opposition can change the course of the country,” the group said.
The G100 described the summit as a historic opportunity for the opposition to build a framework capable of translating its collective strength into a credible political alternative.
“History has presented the opposition with an opportunity. We must be wise enough not to waste it,” the group said.
