Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over a suspicious credit transaction into one of his private bank accounts, alleging a possible breach of his confidential banking information.
In a statement issued on Friday, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, disclosed that the transfer originated from an individual unknown to the former Vice President and was accompanied by the narration: “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
According to the statement, neither Atiku nor his campaign solicited, authorised, or had prior knowledge of the individual or entity responsible for the payment.
“The circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency,” the statement said, stressing that the account is a strictly private one whose details are not publicly available.
Shaibu questioned how unknown persons obtained the confidential banking details of a private citizen, warning that if the private banking information of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate could be accessed and used without authorisation, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.
He suggested that the information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access, describing such a possibility, if confirmed, as “a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters, and other criminal elements.”
The statement described the incident as the latest in a series of suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections and urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what it called “tired tactics that smack of character assassination.”
It added that “such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again,” insisting that the Waziri Adamawa remains focused on presenting credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
