…It will be too easy to defeat the governor, says Adegboyega
Barrister Adeniyi Oyekunle, Chairman Omi/Apata Local Council Development Area of Oyo state at the weekend said Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the state deserves to be go honoured with the seat of Oyo South Senatorial district in 2019 for his brilliant performance as the governor of the state since 2011.
Barrister Oyekunle, who stated this in an interview with newsmen at his chamber located at Iwo-Road, Ibadan, maintained that a recent statement by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, that Ajimobi deserves a third term if not for constitutional impediment was “a royal and elderly advice that the governor should be trusted with another public office in 2019.”
The council chairman maintained that by that statement, the Olubadan had recommended Ajimobi for senate in 2019, adding that All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in the Oyo south senatorial district will prevail on the governor to contest and support him.
But a former governorship candidate in Oyo state, Dr. Raymond Adegboyega, said it will amount to a slap on the face of Oyo south senatorial district if the ruling APC presents Governor Ajimobi as a senatorial candidate in 2019, despite his apparent failure as the state governor.
Speaking with journalists at the weekly meeting of his political group, the New Dawn, which took place at Adeoyo area of Ring-Road, Ibadan on Sunday, Dr. Adegboyega, who is also an aspirant for the seat of Oyo south senatorial district, declared that it will be too easy to defeat Ajimobi in 2019.
Adegboyega challenged Ajimobi to point to his major achievement when he represented Oyo south in the National Assembly from 2003 to 2007, just as he advised the governor to test his popularity by joining the 2019 senatorial race.
Speaking earlier, Barrister Oyekunle declared that Ajimobi is competent and experienced enough to represent the people of Oyo south, and that allowing the governor to go back into the National Assembly is the only way to compensate his for his meritorious service to the people of the state as the governor.
The council boss said: “If somebody has worked well, if somebody has served well as the governor of the state, we should be able to compensate him with the senatorial seat. Let me tell you, Governor Ajimobi is not the one clamouring to go to the Senate, we APC leaders and members are the ones clamouring that the governor should go back to the Senate in 2019.”
